Dance Group

The Sons of Portugal Folklore Dance Group was founded on November 10, 1977 and is now situated within the Portuguese Cultural Center in Danbury, Connecticut. The group consists of musicians, dancers, singers with original costumes representing Portugal. The organization is formed by two types of Officers: Administrative and Artistic. This Folklore Group has a purpose not only for socialization among its members, but as well as to educate, stimulate, develop, encourage, cultivate, sponsor and promote public interest, awareness, appreciation and understanding of the traditional culture and language of Portugal.

O Rancho Folclórico Filhos de Portugal da cidade de Danbury, do estado de Connecticut foi fundado em 1977. Com sede no Centro Cultural Português  e tem como objectivos fundamental promover o convívio entre si, familiars, amigos e também a promoção e divulgação de usos e costumes da tradição portuguesa.  Este Rancho é constituido por uma Direcção que se subedivide em duas secções (artística e administrativa) também por ensaiadores, músicos, cantadores, cantadeiras, dançarinos, dançarinas e figurants todos típicamente trajados.

History

The Sons of Portugal Folklore Dance Group was founded by Mr. Artur Martins, with the joining of a few of his friends, on November 10th, 1977. Since that very day, the group has been dedicated to presenting the cultural values of the Portuguese to all those who were willing to watch. Upon his return to Portugal, Artur left the group in the charge of two of his children, Jorge Martins and Manuela Ribeiro, whom have committed years to the preservation of his legacy, and now get to pass down to his grandchildren.

The Sons of Portugal Folklore Dance Group prides itself in it's love for all things Portuguese. With a wide age range of members, from those crawling in uniform to those in their golden years, all share their pride in being a part of this continuously growing family. Now with 30 years of experience and knowledge of tradition, we hope to keep this legacy going strong.

O Rancho Folclórico Filhos de Portugal teve o seu início no ano de 1977 e a sua apresentação em público a 10 de Novembro do mesmo ano pela mão do Mestre Artur Martins e mais alguns amigos. Natural de Nabainhos do concelho de Gouveia. Actualmente este grupo está a ser ensaiado pelos seus filhos, Jorge Martins e Manuela Ribeiro. O Rancho Folclórico tem-se dedicado ao longo de estes anos á preservação e divulgação de danças e cantares, usos e costumes, não só oriundos da região Beira Alta, como também de outras regiões do nosso pais.

The Sons of Portugal Folklore Dance Group has performed in various occasions in our city, as well as in many different locations all over New England that we were greatfully invited to. Such performances include dancing in Public Schools, Ethnic Festivals, Danbury Public Library, Convalescent Homes and various parades. With this we have also distributed knowledge of the Portuguese culture to students for curriculum purposes and even have provided entertainment at weddings.

Our group represents Portugal from North to South, whether it is by our dances, music, or by our traditional costumes. We also offer different demonstrations of working rituals and moments of pleasure. To better understand what this group offers, it is fair to enhance some themes, such as:

  • Portuguese Folklore Dances

  • Presentation of the Flailing of the Wheat 

  • Portuguese Traditional Games

  • Presentation of the Peeling of Corn Rituals

O Rancho Folclórico Filhos de Portugal em várias ocasiões tem actuado na nossa cidade de Danbury, assim como fora do estado de Connecticut. Tais actuações têm ocurrido nas escolas públicas de Danbury, festivais étnicos, na biblioteca publica de Danbury, casas de convalescença e várias defiles. Com tudo isto, nós têmos também distribuido o conhecimento da cultura Portuguesa a estudantes e adultos para efeito de curriculo. Os nossos Trajos têm também sido parte da divulgação da cultura Portuguesa.

Traditional Outfits

The costumes worn by our group is a collection that we have gathered through many years. What makes us unique from other ranchos is that we do not focus on just one region of Portugal, but rather the entire nation. Just as our dances are diverse, so are our uniforms. 

     

Os trajes usados pelo nosso grupo sao fruto de uma recolha efectuada no local de origem. Somos um grupo diferente dos demais pelo facto de nao nos concentrarmos numa regiao apenas mas representarmos Portugal de les-a-les incluindo a ilha da Madeira e o arquipelago dos Acores. Consuante a variedade das dancas, assim e a variedade e riqueza dos trajes.
